Guide: your own AI key
AI receipt recognition needs an account of your own with OpenAI, Google or Anthropic. The step-by-step guide to getting your own AI key walks you through all three providers – including the cost per receipt and how to enter the key in ContoTrip.

Why do I need my own AI key?
ContoTrip has no server of its own. For receipt recognition you talk directly to the provider of your choice, using your own account. That keeps your receipts out of our hands, and you pay only for what you actually use. You can get a key from OpenAI, Google AI Studio or Anthropic. It is stored in the iOS keychain. Google offers a free tier that is enough to get started and requires no payment method.
One condition belongs with that: on the free tier Google reserves the right to use the submitted content to improve its products – with ContoTrip that would be your receipt photos, including the merchant, the amounts and everything else printed on the slip. If you would rather avoid that, add a payment method and use the paid tier, for which Google excludes this use. Our guide to getting your own AI key walks through all three providers step by step.
What does ContoTrip Pro cost, and is it a subscription?
Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It unlocks unlimited trips, AI receipt recognition and CSV export. Up to two trips, manual capture, the currency converter, receipt photos, the per-trip budget and iCloud sync stay free forever. The cost of your AI provider is not included in the purchase price.
I bought Pro but it is missing on my new device
Open the purchase screen in the app and tap “Restore purchases”. What matters is that you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used for the purchase.
My trips are not syncing between my devices
Check that both devices are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID and that iCloud is enabled for ContoTrip (Settings, Apple ID, iCloud). Syncing runs in the background and can take a moment on a poor connection.
The exchange rate does not match my card statement
That is expected: ContoTrip uses the market rate at the time of capture, while your bank uses its own rate and often adds a fee. You can override the rate by hand on every expense – just enter the value from your statement. The rate is frozen per expense so your totals stay stable later on; for receipts with an older date the app uses the historical rate of that day.
Can I export a trip?
Yes, with Pro. A trip can be exported as a CSV file and shared via AirDrop, mail or a messenger – for an expense claim, for instance, or to work with it in a spreadsheet.
How do I delete my data?
You delete individual trips, expenses and receipts in the app. Deleting the app removes the local data; iCloud data is managed in the iOS settings under iCloud. You can remove the AI key in the app settings.
Reporting a bug
Describe as precisely as you can what you did and what happened. Device, iOS version, app version and – if possible – a screenshot all help. We usually reply within a few working days.
